About The EASTC

The Eastern Africa Statistical Training Centre (EASTC) was established in July 1965 under an agreement between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the East Africa Common Services Organization (EACSO), the predecessor to the East African Community (EAC) that was established in 1967. It mainly served the three partners; State of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Some English speaking neighbouring countries had informal access to it.

In 1972 the UNDP ended its support and the East African Community(successor to EACSO) took full control of the Centre Until 1977. When the East African Collapsed in 1977, the Statistical Training Programme for Africa (STPA) requested Tanzania Government to run The Centre and expand the number of countries to be served to thirteen, namely Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Eritrea and Namibia were added later. It was later agreed that the Centre should be established as a Tanzanian Institution with a regional charactrer where other countries would formally have access to its facilities. A law was passed by Tanzania Parliament esterblishing the Eastern Africa Statistical Training Centre in November 1994. Tanzania and user countries have signed protocol (memorandum of understanding) in which obligations and previleges of user countries are specified. It assures user countries of participation in the activities of the Centre including membership in the Advisory Board and access to the facilities of the centre.
On 17 May 2002, the Centre was launched as an Executive Agency under the Executive Agency Act, 1997. However, it retained the regional arrangements.

The EASTC is located on Observation Hill, thirteen kilometres west of the city centre of Dar es Salaam. The campus is within Changanyikeni village on the west side of the University of Dar es Salaam campus, at a distance of one and a half kilometres from the administration block of the University. It shares a common border with the University.
