Masters In Official Statistics

The Master’s Degree in Official Statistics (MOS) at National Technical Awards (NTA) Level 9 is a one-and-half year full-time programme. The MOS programme is intended to enable students acquire advanced skills and knowledge from a competence-based education and training (CBET) Master’s degree programme.

 

The MOS is designed to produce competent, responsible and innovative strategic statistical professionals and managers who will work at senior levels as official statisticians, decision makers, and administrators of Official Statistical systems, sub-systems, schemes and programmes designed to respond to the statistical demands of African nations in the Eastern and Southern part.

 

Statistical managers from this programme will be flexible and able to meet challenges of the job market. The programme also addresses developing countries needs at national and international levels as articulated through various development policies.

 

The Master’s Degree in Official Statistics, offered by the Eastern Africa Statistical Training Centre, is a two years programme enabling students to become competent Official Statisticians in the social, economic and socio-economic aspects of a national statistical system. At the end of the programme the prospective Official Statisticians will be competent to:

 

  • Assess statistically social, economic and socio-economic issues and their impact on the economy of a nation; as well as to apply knowledge and skills and understanding of complex analytical statistical issues of development problems that are a concern to policy makers and decision makers;
  • Apply statistical and analytical techniques in statistics  production;
  • Employ social statistics in assessing social aspects of a society;
  • Employ economic statistics in assessing economic performance;
  • Apply socio-economic statistics for assessing   cross-cutting issues in a society;
  • Manage a statistical office; and
  • Conduct a statistical research addressing socio- economic issues of a society.
