PRESS RELEASE - STATISTICAL TRAINING PROJECT AT EASTERN AFRICA STATISTICAL TRAINING CENTRE (EASTC)

Eastern Africa Statistical Training Centre (EASTC) signed an Agreement with the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development (AICS) on 5th May, 2016 for the implementation of a cooperation project for capacity building in statistics. The Department of Statistical Sciences at Sapienza University of Rome, University of Padua, and ISTAT (National Institute of Statistics) joined the agreement, too. This signing took place at EASTC during the visit by AICS Officials in May 2016.

 

EASTC officials visited Rome between 22nd and 23rd June 2017 to finalize preparations for the implementation of the cooperation project. The result is the commencement of the implementation today, Monday 11th September, 2017, whereby the first professor from Padua University will start to train EASTC students and officials from the National Statistical Offices (NSOs) in Tanzania on Population Analysis and Projection. The training is going to last for five (5) days.

 

In general the objectives of each course to be taught will be afforded by a strong practical approach aimed at providing students with competencies in the use of specific software to elaborate and analyze data. Furthermore, where applicable, students will be introduced to the most advanced methodologies to design surveys, developing electronic questionnaires, applying multivariate models on data collected, building up complex indicators, analyzing secondary data and will also be provided with useful insights on policies oriented to support good practices.

 

EASTC is ready to provide the needed facilities for the training and will avail full support to make the project a success. Also the centre is thankful to the Italian Government, through AICS and the two Universities for the initiative to do the training at EASTC. The Centre believes this is just the beginning in the development of more cooperation in the area of statistical training aimed at improving the quality of official statistics for informed decisions in the country. The Centre also anticipates that the Italian Development co-operation-funded Statistics Capacity Building project at the EASTC will strengthen capacity development in English Speaking Countries in Africa quench vision of statistical development in Africa.
