Entry Requirements

The PhD programme, being professionally-oriented, is intended for those who are senior managers currently working or have worked in the National Statistical Offices (NSO) in their own countries. This means that each PhD candidate will work on the thesis in line with his or her specialized area of work to ensure that the thesis is professionally based.

 

 Who Can Apply

There are three categories of applicants; and the applicant has to determine which category he/she belongs to:

  • Category A:

Applicants who fall under this category are candidates who have worked in a National Statistical Office for not less than 10 years after acquiring a Bachelor's degree in Theoretical Statistics from any recognized higher learning institution.

 

  • Category B:

Applicants who fall under this category are candidates who have a Master’s degree, from any recognized higher learning institution, in a statistics-related subject area, preferably Official Statistics. They should be working or have worked in any National Statistical System for not less than three years.

 

  • Category C:

Applicants who fall under this category are candidates who have recently acquired a Master’s degree in Official Statistics, or a Master’s degree in Agricultural Statistics. These candidates need not necessarily have any work experience but they are aspiring to work in the National Statistical System in any country in Africa.

EASTC being a professional institution has the following entry requirements for Master's degree in Agricultural Statistics(MAS);

  • Having worked in a National Statistical System office for not less than 6 years after acquiring a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics or any other science related subject.

 

  • Candidates who have NTA level 8 / Bachelor qualifications with Statistics or Science related Subjects with a GPA of 2.7 or above.

 

  • Candidates with unclassified degree should have a credit or a distinction in the subject of intended Master's degree.

 

  • Candidates with Pass degrees will also be considered for admission if:- their undergraduate performance in the proposed subject of study was a 'B' grade average or above, and they have satisfied the Centre that they have exhibited academic potential through extensive field work/ research experience of at least three years and/or additional professional development courses of duration of at least three months.

 

  • Candidates who are non-degree holders but do hold Advance or Postgraduate Diplomas may be considered for admission provided that such Diplomas are in the Upper second/Distinction category and are from institutions considered to be Institutions of Higher Learning recognized by Tanzania Commission for University (TCU).

 

EASTC being a professional institution has the following entry requirements for Master's degree in Official Statistics(MOS);

  • Having worked in a National Statistical System office for not less than 6 years after acquiring a Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics or any other science related subject.

 

  • A first degree in Statistics, Economics and Mathematics from a recognized higher learning institutions. The applicant should be working with the NSS.

 

  • Candidates with unclassified degree should have a credit or a distinction in the subject of intended Master's degree.

 

  • Candidates with Pass degrees will also be considered for admission if:- their undergraduate performance in the proposed subject of study was a 'B' grade average or above, and they have satisfied the Centre that they have exhibited academic potential through extensive field work/ research experience of at least three years and/or additional professional development courses of duration of at least three months.

 

  • Candidates who are non-degree holders but do hold Advance or Postgraduate Diplomas may be considered for admission provided that such Diplomas are in the Upper second/Distinction category and are from institutions considered to be Institutions of Higher Learning recognized by Tanzania Commission for University (TCU).

 

Admission will be open to Candidates who have a relevant Diploma (NTA 6) or its equivalent established by NACTE based on Tanzania Education System

 

OR

 

An Advanced level Secondary School Certificate with at least two minimum passes including Mathematics or at least two minimum passes and a subsidiary pass in Basic Applied Mathematics or its equivalent as established by NECTA.

Ordinary level Secondary School Certificate with at least four passes including Mathematics and English or its equivalent as established by NECTA based on Tanzania Education System.

 

OR

 

An Ordinary level Secondary School Certificate and NVA 3/ Data Collectors Certificate in a relevant field from recognized VETA Institution.

A relevant Certificate (NTA 4) or its equivalent as established by NACTE based on Tanzania Education System.

 

OR

 

An Advanced level Secondary School Certificate with a minimum pass in Mathematics or Subsidiary in Basic Applied Mathematics and a pass I English at Ordinary level Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent as established by NECTA.

An ordinary level Secondary School Certificate with at least a pass. The applicant must have done Mathematics and English, or its equivalent as established by NECTA based on Tanzania Education System.
