Essential statistics for planners, policy and decision makers in the socio-economic areas

Learning objectives:

The purpose of the course is to equip planners with the knowledge of statistics (in an applied sense) that will enable them to look and/or ask for relevant statistical information for their day to day activities, be able to scrutinise the available statistical data, and, be able to liaise with statisticians on the format of statistics needed for their daily work, leading to evidence based decision making and planning.

Course content:

  • Introduction to statistics for planners;
  • Role of statistics in planning and decision making;
  • Types of data that planners and decision makers should seek for their work;
  • Key questions that planners/policy makers need to ask before accepting any data/statistics;
  • Importance and means of establishing a statistical system in an organisation;
  • Sources of data for planning and decision making;
  • Methods of data collection for planning purposes;
  • Elements of sampling and its importance in data collection;
  • Data processing and analysis for planning;
  • Importance of time series data and their application in planning activities;
  • Challenges and prospects of access to timely, relevant and reliable statistical data by planners in developing counties.

Target Group: People working in planning portfolio in the Ministries, Local Governments and Agencies, planning in other institutions, like NGO, and statisticians closely working in the planning departments in all areas. The course is very ideal for Heads (Directors/Managers) of Planning/Research Departments and Politicians.

Course Fee: Tsh.750,000.00 for Tanzanian

USD 1,500 for Non Tanzanian
