Official
statistics are statistics that provide quantitative or qualitative information
on all major areas of citizens' lives, such as economic and social
development, living conditions, health, education and the environment.
The
official statistics are organized in three categories as follows:

Economic Statistics such as Agricultural Statistics, Price
Statistics, Infrastructure Statistics, Trade Statistics, Industrial Statistics,
Labour Statistics, etc.

Social Statistics such as Education Statistics, Health Statistics,
Housing Statistics, Criminal and Justice Statistics, etc.
Β·
Socio-economic (Cross-cutting) Statistics such as Gender Statistics, Environmental Statistics, etc.
Graduate
of Official Statistics can work in both Government and Private Sector. Both
central government (MDAs) and local governmentsβ bodies have statistics and
planning departments that make use of statisticians. Government agencies such
as central bank, tax authority, port authority, energy regulatory authority
etc. have statistics department as well. International and national
non-profit organizations employ statisticians as monitoring and evaluation
officers for the projects they carry out in countries they work in. Other statisticians
work in the National Statistical Office, these are responsible for the
population censuses, economic census and agricultural censures as well as
surveys which are smaller undertakings than the census. Some statisticians work
in statistical departments of regional integration bodies as EAC, and SADC.
Can
Official Statistician employ himself or herself?
Statistics
is a discipline mainly concerned with designing experiments; data collection;
data processing, analysis and interpretations to aid understanding; report
writing and dissemination. Therefore, graduate of official statistics can
employ himself or herself as an independent researcher, data analyst, etc. in
any sector of interest.
HOLDERS OF FORM 6 (ADVANCED CERTIFICATE OF SECONDARY EDUCATION) AND OFP PROGRAMME
Two principal passes in the following subjects: Advanced Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Accountancy, Agriculture, Geography, Economics, Computers, Commerce, Business Studies and Computer Science. If one of the principal passes is not in Advanced Mathematics, a Subsidiary pass in Basic Applied Mathematics or a minimum of ββDββ grade in Mathematics at O-Level is required or Foundation Programme of the OUT with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
